The Public Interest Disclosure Act 2018 (PID Act) began on 1 July 2019, replacing the Whistleblowers Protection Act 1993. The Act gives better protection for informants and improves transparency and accountability in government and the public sector.

The PID Act applies in different ways to the two types of public interest information:

  1. Environment and health information – this gives protection to anyone who discloses environmental and health information, where there’s a substantial risk to the environment or to public health and safety.  You can find out more here: Whistleblowers factsheet
  2. Public administration information – this gives protection to public servants who disclose administrative information where there’s potential corruption, misconduct, or maladministration.

Staying protected

To make sure you’re protected under the PID Act, you’ll need to make an appropriate disclosure of public interest information. Find out what you need to know here: Public Interest Disclosure procedure
