A major national report released today confirms South Australia is outperforming every other state and territory in housing supply growth, as the State Government continues to drive policies to build more homes.

The National Housing Supply and Affordability Council's State of the Housing System 2026 report shows South Australia recorded the strongest growth in new housing supply of any state in 2025, with a 13.2 per cent increase in annual dwelling completions.

South Australia’s housing growth rate was higher than any other state and bucked a trend seen in other states like Victoria who recorded negative growth (down 10.6 per cent) in a year where more homes were built in South Australia than in any other year.

South Australia also recorded building approvals growth of 12.3 per cent over the year to February 2026, outpacing most of the nation and demonstrating the pipeline of new homes being built for South Australians is strong and growing.

The report confirms South Australia is part of a group of mid-sized states – alongside Queensland and Western Australia – that are leading the country in building approvals and supply delivery, while larger states like Victoria and New South Wales face greater structural challenges.

South Australia’s strong housing performance comes at a time of warning about risks to housing supply from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The report foreshadows significantly lower housing completion data being the outcome of higher fuel prices flowing through to increased transport and construction material costs.

The ambitious plan to build more homes that the State Government took to last month’s state election, which will sit alongside the significant investments and reforms of the Premier’s Housing Roadmap, positions South Australia to weather these pressures better than most.
