The state government has secured a lifeline for the Adelaide Bike Kitchen by sourcing the volunteer-run organisation a new base located just around the corner from its current home.

An agreement has been reached by Renewal SA with a nearby landowner for the Adelaide Bike Kitchen to use a vacant warehouse on East Street at Brompton, about 300 metres from its existing home on the corner of Gibson and Third streets at Bowden, for the next 16 months.

The agreement will also secure additional parking at the new site for the Bowden/Brompton area, as works soon kick off on Sentinel’s 240-apartment development with that site currently being used as a temporary car park.

The Adelaide Bike Kitchen has operated at Bowden since 2012 with the support of Renewal SA, leasing the site with the understanding it would eventually be sold for residential development.

The current site, which also houses the Bowden Discovery Centre, was sold last year to South Australian developer Otello, which is preparing to begin construction on new health and wellbeing facilities beneath more than 100 apartments.

Adelaide Bike Kitchen announced the closure of its current site last month and will reopen at the new location within weeks.

A total of 145 car parks will open on the site at the same time, offering free limited parking for precinct visitors to support local traders until Bowden’s 221‑space multi‑deck car park opens in 2027.

The new Adelaide Bike Kitchen location and Bowden car parking site are located between Drayton Street and East Street at Brompton.
