The State Government has launched a landmark partnership with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation to create a brand-new Arts & Media Hub in the heart of the CBD.

The deal will see the ABC move from its current outdated headquarters at Collinswood to the Tapangka development site on Franklin Street alongside the State Theatre Company, State Opera and Country Arts South Australia - creating a vibrant new cultural centre within the heart of the city.

The Hub will be located at the former Adelaide Bus Station site on Franklin Street, adjacent to the Adelaide Central Market, as part of the transformative Tapangka precinct being developed by Renewal SA, and is set to be complete by 2030/31.

The Hub will feature galleries, studios and rehearsal spaces to enable creatives to develop new programs and support collaboration between beloved South Australian arts organisations and the ABC.

The State Government will invest $51 million toward the new home for State Theatre Company, Country Arts South Australia and State Opera to ensure South Australians have ongoing access to quality theatre, opera and arts programming from across the state for the future.

The new deal follows the State Government’s $12 million investment in a partnership between the ABC and the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) to produce an ongoing pipeline of high-quality television production in our state.

It can be revealed that through this partnership, season 3 of popular ABC series Austin will be filmed in South Australia, with filming taking place around Adelaide and the Adelaide Hills.

The production is anticipated to inject more than $3 million into the state’s economy, employing 13 South Australian Heads of Department, 79 SA crew and up to 180 extras in addition to the many businesses and services engaged.

In recent years, this partnership has seen multiple series filmed here in South Australia including children’s series Beep and Mort and drama series Ladies in Black and Gold Diggers and created hundreds of jobs within the screen industry.

Tapangka will also allow for residential and commercial development, providing even more critical housing supply at a prime location within the CBD.

The announcement comes almost a year after the Government and the ABC launched a feasibility study exploring the relocation of ABC operations from its current Collinswood facility.

In recent months, the State Government has revealed plans or celebrated milestones for development that will transform our CBD.

These include construction commencing at Festival Tower Two on the Riverbank Precinct, the announcement of one of the largest student accommodation housing developments on the corner of North Terrace and Frome Street and revealing plans for the four-tower City East development that will revitalise the East End.
