Work has now begun to completely renovate and modernise the SA Housing Trust walk-up flat site at 61 Walkerville Terrace in Gilberton.

Last year, the State Government announced plans to renovate Bentzen Court, delivering safer, greener and more functional public housing that better integrates with the wider community.

The first stage of works – part of a $9.68 million upgrade – involving the demolition of outdated external laundries is now underway, with work on the first two buildings to be revamped being the next step.

The site layout will be improved to increase visibility, enhance visual appeal and provide greater liveability for tenants.

The new layout will improve sightlines by reducing concealed areas, making it harder for people who should not be there to loiter on site. The new approach, combined with better lighting, supports passive surveillance and a safer environment.

Improvements to units will include new kitchens and bathrooms, internal laundries, improved lighting, upgraded fencing and pathways, enhanced landscaping and strengthened security measures.

Improved lighting and landscaping designs are being carefully developed to improve safety while being considerate of neighbouring residents.

Tenant relocations are nearing completion, with tenants supported to relocate to other suitable Housing Trust homes.

The Member for Adelaide has continued to convene the Gilberton Working Residents Group, bringing the SA Housing Trust and residents together to work on planning the project.

The State Government is undertaking a program of renovations to make dated Housing Trust walk-up flats cleaner and safer by modernising, maintaining and refurbishing key sites.

The State Government has also introduced the SA Housing Trust’s Good Neighbour Policy, requiring tenants who have an antisocial behaviour complaint substantiated against them to take immediate steps to amend their behaviour.
