South Australia's housing pipeline is running at record levels across every stage, with generational highs for housing approvals, commencements, homes under construction and completions, as the State Government's housing reforms continue to deliver.

ABS Building Approvals data released yesterday shows 15,308 dwellings were approved in South Australia in the 12 months to July 2026, a 4.6 per cent increase, or 668 additional homes, compared with the 14,640 approvals recorded in the year to July 2025.

It is the fourth consecutive month South Australia has recorded its strongest annual approvals result in four decades. The last time approvals were running this high was in 1985.

Annual approvals are now 19 per cent higher than in 2022, with approvals 23 per cent above the 5-year monthly average.

South Australia's monthly increase came as approvals fell nationally by 3.6 per cent, with declines recorded in New South Wales (-8.1 per cent), Queensland (-13.9 per cent) and Western Australia (-0.3 per cent).

South Australia is the only mainland state to record growth over both the month and the year.

Approvals are the front end of the housing pipeline, and South Australia is now posting record results at every stage behind them - construction commenced, homes under construction and homes completed.

ABS Building Activity data shows 14,130 homes were completed in South Australia in the year to March 2026, more than in any other year on record, and South Australia was the only state to record growth in completions over the year.

The sustained increase follows the release of the Housing Roadmap in 2024, which set out a major policy effort, from streamlined planning approvals to record infrastructure investment, to get more homes built for South Australians in the right locations, faster.

To achieve South Australia's economic potential, the State Government has set a target of 13,500 home completions annually.
