South Australia has approved more new homes in a single year than at any time in history, as the state government’s housing reforms continue to deliver.

ABS Building Approvals data released Monday shows 16,408 dwellings were approved in South Australia in the 12 months to September 2026, an 11.4 per cent increase, or around 1,680 additional homes, compared with the previous year.

The sustained increase follows the release of the Premier’s Housing Roadmap in 2024, which set out a major policy effort to get more homes built for South Australians.

Annual home approval in SA - September 2026

In the year before the Housing Roadmap, 11,330 homes were approved, meaning the policy measures have contributed to a 44 per cent increase in home approvals in just over two years.

Approvals are the front end of the housing pipeline. The number of homes that have commenced construction (15,403), are under construction (15,880) and have been completed (13,738) shows the entire housing pipeline is operating at levels never seen before in South Australia.

The record 16,408 homes approved in the last year sits comfortably above the state government’s target of 13,500 home completions annually needed to achieve South Australia’s economic potential.
